The Turbulence of Perimenopause

Sept 11, 2026
Perimenopause isn't a smooth decline  in hormones, it's turbulence.

Microjoy has always focused on mental health and wellness, and we want to talk more about perimenopause. A major life transition that can rock your mental health and effect all aspects of your being, this is the time to get serious about symptoms and not feel alone.

THE SCIENCE
Estrogen doesn't taper off steadily — it can surge well above your normal baseline, then crash, then spike again, sometimes within the same week, because your ovaries are winding down erratically rather than gradually.

At the same time, progesterone drops as ovulation becomes irregular, and progesterone is normally what "buffers" estrogen's effects — so as that cushion disappears, estrogen's swings hit harder and more directly. FSH and LH (the hormones that signal your ovaries) also climb and add their own variability on top.

Why that produces a whack-a-mole symptom pattern rather than one steady complaint: estrogen receptors are all over the body — brain, temperature regulation, sleep centers, mood circuitry, so a swing in estrogen doesn't pick one symptom, it can hit several systems at once.

A week where estrogen spikes might look like PMS-style symptoms (irritability, bloating, tenderness). A week where it crashes might bring hot flashes or night sweats. Add irregular cycles and disrupted sleep into the mix and you get exactly the "different symptom, different week" experience a lot of women describe — it's not you being inconsistent, it's genuinely which hormone is unstable that week.

WHY WE DIDN'T BUILD JUST ONE GUMMY
FOR PERIMENOPAUSE AND CALL IT DONE

Perimenopause isn't a single event. It's a transition that fluctuates and lasts an average of four years but can stretch to ten. Along the way, it rewires nearly everything: how you sleep, how you think, how you feel, how much energy you have no matter what you do to support it. And the process is unique for everyone.

A few facts that might surprise you:

About two-thirds of women report memory and concentration complaints during this transition, the "brain fog" that makes you re-read the same email three times isn't in your head.

Up to 70% of women report new sleep disturbances, and it's not just hot flashes waking you up. Shifting hormones affect sleep quality directly.

Roughly 40% experience mood swings that mimic PMS, except unlike PMS, they don't follow a predictable calendar. They just show up.

None of that is a personal failing. It's biology.
And it's exactly why we didn’t set out to make a one size fits all remedy.
